Will the NDIS fund my Holiday?

Holidays are ideal for those who want to escape or take a break from their routine. You get to spend more time with your loved ones, or if you want, you can have time to yourself too.

However, the question is whether or not the NDIS will fund my vacation as an NDIS participant. The answer would be NO. They will not cover your entire holiday expense, but you can expect funds for support and services to make your holiday possible.

Which support and services are included?

It includes support and services that are directly related to your disability. The NDIS will be funding those supports and services that you might need for your holidays. That also includes taking support workers with you, hiring portable equipment, and incurring additional costs for transport and accommodation.

NDIS participants who require support worker assistance on a regular and repeated basis must bring support workers with them. For that reason, the NDIS will give you financial aid.

A lot of the time, at hotels and while traveling, you may need to get special equipment to assist you, like a hoist to get in and out of the bed. You should talk to your support coordinator about what equipment you will need for your trip so that your support coordinator can manage it before your trip.

The NDIS will also cover your transportation and accommodations, but there is a slight difference in that. They will not pay for everything you need as a disabled person, but only for what you need extra as a disabled person.

Because they may not have all of the facilities for disabled people while you are on vacation, the NDIS will provide an allowance for more expensive accommodations and transportation simply because you are disabled. You can expect them to pay that extra amount.

NDIS Travel Provider

There are multiple travel providers that you can choose from, and all of them are NDIS-compliant, so you do not have to think about anything. In their travel plan, they include options like all-access holidays, leisure options, inclusive getaways, and discovery holidays.

Although this is a great option, sometimes participants might want to take a vacation by themselves. So it is entirely up to you to select the option that best suits your needs.

What about overseas travel?

When it comes to overseas travel, there are few differences between them and their funding. The first thing is that if you are planning for a long vacation and you are bringing support workers with you as well, then there is a time limit for that. The NDIS will only provide funds for six weeks while traveling abroad.

If you are traveling abroad for your NDIS plan goal, then you can talk to our support coordinator about this, and they can figure something out regarding that. You might need to hire a support worker who is based in the country you are visiting.

That is going to be covered by the NDIS, but if they do not have an Australian business number, then you might have to pay for the service yourself and then claim the amount from them.

The amount you are going to be spending is going to be in different currencies, so you are required to show the funds in Australian dollars. For that, you can show your credit card statement, which you used to pay for the service.

Things to keep in mind

The first and most important step of any vacation, including this one, is to plan out the entire trip. You need to discuss your whole holiday with your support coordinator before booking the trip.

The next step will be to get a quote or create a service agreement with your support coordinator. So they will have an idea of your plan and suggest an alternative if required, as well as explain to you the terms and conditions of the funding.

If you are willing to travel with the group, then you can save a lot of money. You can make new friends and split the time with the support worker, which means they work and their time is properly utilized, and you do not have to spend a single penny extra either.

This is pretty much it, but if you have any questions regarding your holiday plans, feel free to contact our NDIS Plan Management Perth so you can clear all your doubts.
